Description

*Note* The art was not captured in its true condition because of the camera being used to document this piece. I am almost ashamed to post this due to the destruction of the quality of this piece from the camera.

Size: 18 inches wide by 24 inches high

Charcoal, Chalk on paper. In following the resourcefulness of the Native Americans I used buffalo hide to work with the two mediums and blend the image together.

The portrait is based off the 1800's style of portrait photography when many images of Native Americans were captured in a posed position.

When looking at me, I have very pale/fair skin with light freckling, with rich auburn hair and light blue eyes. I am 1/8th Swiss. However when I tell you that I am also 1/16th Native American Indian from two tribes (Cherokee and BlackFoot) you may start to see some characteristics. The darker hair, the facial structure, the shape of my mouth and even possibly ever so slightly the shape of my eyes.

I take great pride in my heritage!

My Great-Great Aunt was half Cherokee and was very active in her tribe. She worked in a bakery and every evening when the day old baked goods could not be sold, rather then throwing them out, she would give them to the tribe. One day the Chief and some of the warriors came to see her and provided her with a gift. They had selected all the best fox pelts from that hunting season and gave them to her as a gift for being so kind to the tribe. She had them sent off to Chicago and made into a fox fur coat. That coat now belongs to me and is a Native American family heirloom that i will cherish forever.

Being Native American (kind of) is such a place of pride for me, I am so honored to have a little part of me that is connected to the land through my ancestry. There is so much history and still so much for us to learn through the culture of all the Native American Tribes.

Have made this piece of art, I hope it brings to mind all the history that lies within us all.

Your entry is official !!

I wish you good luck at the contest. Despite of the blurry photo, the face, the wrinkles, those expressive (very expressive) eyes... are amazing. Beautiful drawing with a very difficult technique. You can be proud, because you honor your ancestors!!

(I'm not one of the judges. But I think this is a very interesting piece).
